Back to the roots! I should rewrite more movie scenes. It's fun.

Title: Altering
Author: mayachain (mayachain)
Characters: Bobby, John, Rogue, hints of pairings
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: ~600
Summary: Don't you wish Stryker had had somewhat better timing? Set mid-X2.
Notes: This has hibernated in my drawer for a long time.

”You always do what you're told?“

Bobby watches helplessly as John puts on a jacket and steps toward the gangway. The fear is back, the feeling that his life is changing forever, that he's on the verge of losing something he cannot even begin to grasp the scale of. It's even worse than it was yesterday, worse than coming out to his parents. Rogue's eyes are burning holes into his chilly skin. She should say something, he should say something, seal the door, anything, but he can't move.

The next thing he knows is excruciating pain. Without warning, a wave of agony hits them and forces them to the ground. Bobby's vision is clouding over fast as he feels Rogue clutching at his hand. Every single particle of air is squeezing his brain, crunching his head. He holds onto the fabric of her glove for dear life as the world alternates between white and black.

Yet something is distracting him. Through the fog, he manages to sort his own silent screams from Rogue's whimpers, and is left with pitiful groans coming from somewhere below them.

The pain is tremendous, but the tight grip of Rogue's hand has him somewhat anchored.

He cannot imagine living through this alone.

Opening one eye, Bobby manages to turn his head. With a strangled sound that is a mix of relief and agony, he takes in the blurred sight of his friend, fingers clawing at the floor to keep from sliding down the stairs. Almost blind, Bobby lunges forward, dragging Rogue with him. He thinks he's turning to ice with the effort to move, he's afraid he's not going to reach his jerking friend and this will go on for ever and ever, but then he's grabbed John, who is no longer groaning but screaming.

First an arm, then a hand, and when he feels a response and hears the screams subside a bit, Bobby knows they´ll survive this and even if not, at least no-one will die alone.

And then the pain is gone.

For a long moment, they just lie on the hard floor of the Blackbird, eyes closed and panting, too worn out, too exhausted to talk. When Rogue sits up and pulls Bobby upright, he staggers to his feet and lets her hug him hard. Hugs her back one-armed, not ashamed to let out a tiny sob.

His left hand is still holding on to John.

Eventually, Rogue lets go of him, and Bobby knows he cannot hug John as well because that'd be wrong, would feel wrong in front of her, here, but he refuses to let go, either. To his surprise, and to John's surprise, she rests her head against St John's shoulder briefly before walking over to the pilot seat and peeking at the controls.

Bobby trails after her, pretending to be oblivious to the slightly dazed fire-manipulator attached to his hand. He ignores John's puzzled looks, but John doesn't try to break free, and Bobby doesn't lessen his grip. And when Rogue says “I think I know how to start this” and snaps the gangway closed, John is still there, and Bobby knows that his life has changed forever, but he is not afraid any more.

I think the "kill all mutants" thing started a bit earlier, before John made it out of the plane, right? and that's why Bobby could still get him back.

that's a good idea and I like the way you wrote this :)

His left hand is still holding on to John.

that's incredibly cute for some reason, and I don't even ship Ryro
